Oscar Mayer Weiner de la Renta’s open letter to Cathy Horyn today, calling her a 3-day-old hamburger. 

Not at all shockingly, I will side with Ms Horyn on this one. ODLR is referring to her review in which she states that he is more a “hot dog than an eminence grise” which for those of us not up on our idioms en francais, connotes a sort of great, revered figure with large influence and accomplishments in his or her sphere.

So what did she mean by a hot dog? To me, this clearly signals a sort of baseline, standard fare that can be dressed up with pickles and ketchup (embroidery and fur and lace) but remains a staple and is not quite a fresh idea. If this is in fact what Horyn meant, then I have to agree with her.

And no amount of social media frenzy inflicted on us by pr girls talented at spinning clothes that are not particularly interesting into something to gush about, changes that.

Horyn has every right to her opinion, and ODLR has every right to be mildly offended by her review (probably because if he took her meaning properly he knows it’s true). Calling her a three day old hamburger however just seems stupid and betrays his lack of understanding of her criticism.
